Microgreens are quickly becoming the new emerging are miniature
vegetable plants that have a lot of nutrients and an aromatic flavor packed
into them. Essentially, microgreens
are seedlings of edible vegetables and herbs. They grow to be
approximately 1-3” tall and can easily be grown indoors. Looking to start your
microgreens garden? Here are a few tips to help you on your way:
- Chose a location. You want to start with a warm, sunny windowsill with direct sunlight.
- Purchase your Equipment. You can start with a shallow plastic container with holes for drainage, anything with a clear top. You can use almost any take-away container. You can even purchase a propagationkit, which can come with a light if you don’t have a lot of direct sunlight to work with.
- Preparing your Containers. Fill the container with 1-2” of moistened potting mix. We suggest the FoxFarm brand as their products have added nutrients to help your plants grow.
- Plant the seeds. Level the soil, but don’t compress the soil too much. Sprinkle the seeds over the top and add a small layer of soil on top. Lightly spray water the top of soil with a spray bottom. Make sure to place the lid over the containers.
- Caring for your plants. Water regularly daily, but don’t over water. Touch the top of the soil with your finger to check moisture, and make sure your seeds don’t dry out! It is easier to water the plants by using the spray bottle, which helps you not overwater. Make sure to take the lid off as little as possible. You want to create a warm, humid environment for your plants to grow. Once the plants have sprouted, removed the lid and continue to water them with the spray bottle.
- Harvesting your plants. Most plants will be ready to harvest two to three weeks after planting. Snip the greens right above the soil line.
Before serving, wash the greens and dry with a paper towel. Add to soups,
salads, sandwiches or main dishes as close to harvesting as you can for the
freshest flavor. Store your remaining harvested microgreens in a plastic bag in
your refrigerator.
